- Millions of Baby Loungers Recalled After Infant Deaths
September 27, 2021
A little less than one year after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) sent a safety warning about pillow-like baby products, the Boppy Company has announced a recall of approximately 3.3 million baby loungers. These products have been linked to eight infant deaths from December 2015 to June 2020.
The CPSC and Boppy Company say the deaths occurred when the infants were placed on the loungers on their back, side or stomach. Because infants can suffocate so quickly, it is too dangerous to keep these products on the market, according to a statement from Robert S. Adler, who is acting chairman of the CPSC.
All three models of the Boppy Newborn Loungers are being recalled, including the Boppy Original Newborn Lounger, Boppy Preferred Newborn Lounger and Pottery Barn Kids Newborn Boppy Lounger. If you have one of these products, stop using it immediately and get in touch with the Boppy Company to ask for a refund.
These products were sold between January 2004 and September 2021 in the U.S. and Canada and sold by retailers like Walmart, Target, Amazon and Pottery Barn Kids.
In October 2020, the CPSC issued a warning about letting babies sleep in baby loungers due to the possibility of infant death. That is why there is a new federal rule set to take effect in 2022 banning certain sleep products for babies who are less than five months old.
The American Academy of Pediatrics says babies need to sleep on their backs on a firm, flat surface with no bedding, padded bumpers or restraints.
Consumer Reports did an investigation that connected 28 infant deaths to lounging pads, including seven deaths linked to the use of a Boppy product.
A statement from the Boppy Company says the company is committed to taking steps to keep babies safe, such as educating parents about following the instructions about unsafe sleep practices. The statement also says the recalled loungers were not marketed as something for infants to sleep on.
