- Pedestrian Struck by Car Wants Help Finding Driver
February 15, 2016
An Arizona woman is asking residents to come forward if they have any information about the car-versus-pedestrian accident that nearly claimed her life in October of last year.
While enjoying a “trunk-or-treat” Halloween event with her nieces, a 33-year-old local woman attempted to cross the street at the intersection of 124th and Shea Boulevard in Scottsdale.
A car, described by witnesses as a black four-door sedan, struck the woman and then immediately left the scene. According to local authorities, the driver made no attempt to apply the brakes or swerve away from the victim. Instead, the driver hit the woman and sped off, leaving her gravely injured.
The victim, who worked as an eighth grade science teacher at Cocopah Middle School in Scottsdale, remained in a coma for several weeks after the accident. Since then, she has had multiple surgeries and has undergone intense physical therapy and rehabilitation.
While still unable to walk on her own, the victim has regained her ability to speak. At a public fundraiser recently held in her honor, she spoke about her recovery and thanked family, friends, and members of the community for offering their support and well wishes.
She also spoke about the driver who hit her, and how their identity remains unknown. The victim, her family, and local authorities have focused much of their time and attention on locating the at-fault driver, yet their identity and whereabouts are still currently unknown.
Silent Witness, a non-profit organization that provides citizens the opportunity to assist police in solving crimes, has offered a $20,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the hit-and-run driver.
Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents in Arizona are a common occurrence. In fact, Arizona has one of the highest rates of pedestrian accidents in the nation. Statistics indicate that over 1,500 pedestrian accidents occur every year in Arizona, causing over 1,300 injuries and more than 100 deaths.
