What happened at Camp Lejeune?

More than one million service members and their families were exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune from 1953 to 1987. Many became sick or died. Some of the health concerns Marines and their loved ones dealt with as a result of the exposure include, but are not limited to:

• Aplastic anemia and other myelodysplastic syndromes
• Cancers including appendix, bile duct, bladder, brain, breast, cervical, colorectal, esophageal, gallbladder, kidney, liver cancer, leukemia, and more
• Birth defects, fetal death, female infertility, miscarriage, and other reproductive health issues
• Cardiac problems
• End-stage renal disease
• Hepatic steatosis
• Hodgkin lymphoma (Hodgkin disease) and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
• Multiple myeloma
• Neurobehavioral effects
• Parkinson’s disease
• Renal toxicity
• Scleroderma

On August 10, 2022, President Biden signed the Camp Lejeune Justice Act as part of the Honoring our PACT Act. As a result, people who were negatively impacted by living and working at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, between 1953 and 1987 can now use their right to legal action against the United States government for toxic water exposure at that location.
