Car Makers Pledge to Share Recall Data with Government

Following such disastrous and deadly incidents as Volkswagen’s emissions scandal, GM’s faulty ignition switch recall, and Takata’s airbag recall, several different auto manufacturers have agreed to reform the way they report injuries, fatalities, and defective vehicles to the government.

The agreement between the automakers and the government (which many consider a “historic” agreement), will focus on improving vehicle safety and quality by implementing more proactive safety measures, meeting all current recall completion dates, and changing the way Early Warning Reporting data is shared.

Officials from the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration have long felt that auto manufacturers are elusive or incompetent when it comes to providing information regarding the safety of the vehicles they produce.

The Agreement

Along with the U.S. Department of Transportation, 18 different auto manufacturers have pledged to work with the government to enhance vehicle safety and improve resolutions for currently recalled vehicles.

The automakers also agreed to collaborate with other auto manufacturers to help ensure that safety concerns and vehicle recalls become a thing of the past.

For example, automakers will share data and statistics with each other regarding best practices for overall vehicle safety. If automakers have access to all current product safety results, they are less likely to manufacture a vehicle that will ultimately be deemed defective.

Automakers have also pledged to work together to encourage the public to have recalled vehicles repaired as soon as possible.

Anthony Foxx, Secretary for the U.S. Department of Transportation, says he feels these changes will help automakers and government agencies catch safety defects before they cause harm to the public.
