PACT Act Signed Into Law With Camp Lejeune Justice Act Included
August 10, 2022
The Honoring our PACT Act was signed into law on Wednesday, August 10, giving veterans and their loved ones impacted by water contamination at Camp Lejeune a chance to seek justice.
Much of the coverage around President Joe Biden signing the PACT Act into law has focused on expanding health care benefits for veterans exposed to toxic burn pits.
But the Camp Lejeune Justice Act is also included in the legislation, meaning people who were negatively impacted by living and working at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, between 1953 to 1987 can now use their constitutional right to legal action against the United States government for toxic water exposure at that location.
Marines and their family members stationed at the base during that time were exposed to harmful chemicals that may have caused birth defects, cardiac problems, Parkinson’s disease, miscarriage, and forms of cancer including multiple myeloma, leukemia, bladder, lung, or breast cancer, as well as numerous other devastating health conditions.
“This new law matters,” President Biden said before signing the PACT Act bill, according to Axios.
“It matters a lot. It matters a great deal because these conditions have already taken such a toll on so many veterans and their families.”
Military service members and their loved ones who came into contact with hazardous contaminants in the water in base wells at Camp Lejeune can now pursue legal action, and Phillips Law Group wants to help.
At Phillips, we are passionate about getting assistance for our brave military veterans and their families who were stationed at the North Carolina base all those years and were exposed to exceedingly dangerous chemicals that may have caused serious — even deadly — health problems.
It is an injustice that the exposure occurred and that it took so long for it to be brought to the light, and we are outraged for our veterans. If you or a loved one were stationed at Camp Lejeune before 1988, please don’t hesitate to contact Phillips Law Group to learn about all of the legal options available to you now.
