The holiday season can be very exciting, but that excitement also comes with the hustle and bustle of Christmas which can lead to unfortunate incidents like house fires, car accidents, and more. This Christmas, we wanted to offer just a few safety tips to keep in mind to keep you and your loved ones safer during the holidays.
For starters, you’ve probably already got your decorations on display. (And if you don’t, no judgment! It’s the twelve days of Christmas, after all. You’ve got time!) A lot of those decorations likely need electricity to work, which can lead to a very common cause of house fires during the holiday season: overloaded outlets.
Be sure to never overload your outlet or power strips! Those lights may be pretty, but they aren’t worth the devastation of a house fire. You’ve also got to remember to turn off holiday lights and decorations whenever you leave the house and when you go to bed; set an alarm on your phone if you need a reminder!
Speaking of fires, a lot of cooking happens on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, too. Never leave anything you’re cooking unattended – that can be another cause of a heartbreaking house fire. Whether it’s your stovetop, oven, or air fryer, keep an eye on your appliances and your holiday meal, and always have a fire extinguisher nearby just in case.
Many people also set up and decorate a Christmas tree for the holidays, and while they can be a beautiful addition to your home, they also come with certain precautions you need to take. If it’s a real tree, for instance, make sure to keep it hydrated to keep it from becoming a fire hazard. And if it’s fake, as noted above, be careful how many lights and other electric adornments you plug into one outlet.
A lot of people also travel during the holiday season, and many do so by car. You may also be rushing around trying to buy those last few family gifts, or heading home from a company holiday party.
No matter where you’re traveling to or from, make it a priority to drive safely. Bad weather or distractions like your cell phone can turn a calm trip to the store to pick up a Christmas ham into a tragedy in seconds.
And of course, never ever drink and get behind the wheel of a car. Those holiday parties may be fun, but you should plan ahead to have a safe way to get home if you choose to drink alcohol at a holiday get-together.
Keep in mind, too, that other people may be distracted or have had a few drinks before getting on the road. If you do have the misfortune to end up in a wreck during the Christmas season, make sure to give us a call at Phillips Law Group if you need legal assistance.
These are just a few Christmas safety tips to remember this holiday season, and of course, accidents happen every day. If you find yourself in need of a personal injury attorney this Christmas, please don’t hesitate to give our team a call.
Happy Holidays from the whole Phillips Law Group team!
