- Ford Recall Expands Over Engine Fire Risk
June 6, 2023
Ford Motor Company has expanded a recall for a number of Ford and Lincoln vehicles over engine fire risk. The company has already received 23 reports worldwide of fire or smoke coming from the engine, and the new Ford recall expands the warning to cover more than 125,000 SUVs and trucks. The Ford recall involves several different car models that Ford vehicle owners need to be aware of.
Ford Recall Expands to More Vehicles
Ford is recalling certain 2020-2023 Escape, 2022-2023 Maverick, and 2021-2023 Corsair vehicles due to the potential for engine fires, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The NHSTA noted that this recall impacts “86,656 Escapes, 35,501 Mavericks, and 3,165 Corsairs,” and that Ford will notify owners starting on June 12.
“Ford advises customers to safely park and shut off the engine as quicky (sic) as possible if they hear unexpected engine noises, lose power, or see or smell smoke,” the NHTSA warned.
Engine Fire Risk
The Ford recall expansion affects vehicles equipped with 2.5L HEV or PHEV engines. If an engine fails in these vehicles, engine oil and fuel vapor could be released into the engine compartment and collect near ignition sources like hot engine or exhaust elements, which could result in an engine compartment fire, the NHTSA reported.
Ford is currently developing a remedy for the issue. Safety risk notification letters will be mailed to owners in June followed by a second round of letters that will be mailed when a remedy to the problem is worked out, according to USA Today.
Expanded Ford Recall
The latest Ford recall is an expansion on one that occurred last July, according to The Detroit Bureau, an outlet that covers the automotive industry. In the original recall, Ford recalled 100,000 Escapes, Corsairs, and Mavericks.
Vehicle owners are advised to visit NHTSA.gov/recalls or call NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 and to check their 17-digit vehicle identification number to see if their vehicle is impacted by a recall. The NHTSA’s SaferCar app also has up-to-date information on current recalls.
Car Recall Assistance
The Ford recall is just the latest in a series of vehicle recalls, or recalls of specific car components. For example, dangerous Takata airbags were installed in cars primarily from model years 2002 through 2015 in what the NHTSA called “the largest and most complex safety recall in U.S. history.” That recall includes 67 million airbags from more than 42 million vehicles across the country.
