What is Giving Tuesday? All About the Collective Day of Generosity

Chances are, you’ve received a lot of emails and text messages today about something called Giving Tuesday. Tons of organizations and non-profits are reaching out asking for donations, and you’ve likely seen lots of posts about it on social media as well. But what is Giving Tuesday, exactly, and are there some organizations in the Arizona community that could use your support? 

All About Giving Tuesday

According to GivingTuesday.org, “GivingTuesday is invested in communities around the globe with a mandate to propel generosity across every culture, continent, and context.” The day it’s celebrated was created in 2012 as “a day that encourages people to do good,” and the movement has been going strong ever since.

This year, Giving Tuesday takes place on November 28. It usually happens right around Cyber Monday and Black Friday and was implemented “as a day dedicated to giving back after consecutive days of rampant consumerism,” according to Asha Curran, CEO of GivingTuesday, who spoke to NBC News. 

According to the news outlet, last year, more than 37 million adults participated in Giving Tuesday. In the United States alone, it generated $3.1 billion in donations across the official organization’s non-profit partners, representing a 25 percent increase from 2020. We can only hope those numbers increase further this year!

How to Participate in Giving Tuesday

The best way to participate in Giving Tuesday is to give to an organization that needs your support if you have the means to do so. Here at Phillips Law Group, community service is at the heart of our firm, and we have many community outreach partners who would not only benefit from your volunteer support, but from your financial assistance as well. 

Here are just a few of the organizations we work with that would appreciate any donations you can offer this Giving Tuesday:

Women4Women Tempe: Phillips Law Group supports Women4Women Tempe, an organization providing feminine hygiene products to homeless and low-income women in Tempe, ensuring their dignity and health. We regularly host “packing parties” to prepare bags of these products for the individuals Women4Women Tempe serves.

Maggie’s Place: Phillips Law Group is proud to partner with Maggie’s Place, an organization dedicated to providing safe housing and a supportive community for homeless pregnant women. Our firm participates in frequent volunteer opportunities for the women and families Maggie’s Place helps. 

My Hope Bag: Phillips Law Group proudly collaborates with My Hope Bag, an organization dedicated to supporting women, including those diagnosed with breast cancer. Each Wednesday, we celebrate our “On Wednesdays, We Wear Pink” campaign, and for every employee who wears pink every Wednesday, we donate money to this amazing organization.

MANA House: Our firm regularly volunteers with MANA House, which stands for Marines, Army, Navy, and Air Force. The organization provides transitional housing and “is a peer-run organization of homeless and formerly homeless veterans offering personal, individualized basic resources, community, and advocacy for all veterans.”

The Foster Alliance: Phillips Law Group has a long-standing partnership with The Foster Alliance, previously known as Arizona Helping Hands. The mission of The Foster Alliance is to support the foster care community “by providing essentials to benefit children in foster care.” We are excited to continue helping this incredible organization in the future to make a difference for foster kids in our communities. 

NourishPHX: Our firm recently started a volunteer partnership with NourishPHX, an organization that assists Phoenix residents who face economic challenges when it comes to food, clothing, and more. The organization even offers education and employment assistance!

A New Leaf: Another one of our community outreach collaborations is a new volunteer partnership with A New Leaf, an organization that is passionate about helping households to recover and thrive from major life challenges. The organization is dedicated to helping families, children, and adults facing obstacles of all kinds.

Cloud Covered Streets: Cloud Covered Streets is a 501c3 nonprofit with the goal of providing “hope, compassion, kindness, connection, and essential supplies to those experiencing homelessness.” In recent months, the organization has been working alongside Phillips Law Group to help the homeless through the firm’s Feeding Arizona events.
