Organizations like the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have all classified benzene as a substance that is highly dangerous to human beings.

The IARC says benzene is carcinogenic to humans — carcinogenic means cancer-causing. The EPA classifies benzene as a human carcinogen and the FDA considers benzene to be a Class 1 solvent that should not be used when manufacturing drugs or drug products.

It is also important to note there is no safe level of exposure to benzene, as opposed to other substances that are dangerous only after high levels of exposure. This was the conclusion of Yale University’s Dr. Christopher Bunick, whose conclusion was cited by Valisure in its report on sunscreen brands tested for benzene. Bunick is an Associate Professor of Dermatology.

It is important to note serious health consequences could result from using sunscreen with benzene levels as low as 0.1 parts per million.

Valisure noted that the sunscreen products that were tested did not list benzene as an active ingredient. That is why Valisure concluded these products must have been contaminated somehow. Johnson & Johnson and Coppertone both said the recalls were being done out of an abundance of caution. Johnson & Johnson also said benzene is not an ingredient in any of their sunscreen products.

Many sunscreens contain oxybenzone as an active ingredient. While the FDA claims this chemical is safe, concerns have been raised about potential side effects.

For example, The Environmental Working Group says this is the “most worrisome” active ingredient in sunscreen. Research has found oxybenzone may cause skin allergies and disrupt normal hormone functioning. This chemical may be more harmful to children than adults.

The National Toxicology Program studied the effects of oxybenzone on rats and found strong evidence of carcinogenic activity. Starting in 2021, the state of Hawaii has banned sunscreens that contain this chemical over concerns it may damage coral reefs.
