Produced by pharmaceutical maker Novartis AG, Zelnorm was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the short-term treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in women in July 2002 (the drug has shown little effectiveness in treating men with IBS). In August 2004, the FDA also approved Zelnorm for the treatment of chronic constipation in men and women under age 65.

On March 30, 2007, a new FDA warning to healthcare providers and patients cited data collected from 29 clinical trials involving more than 18,000 patients that reported an alarming number of potentially life-threatening cardiovascular ischemic events (including unstable angina, heart attack, and stroke) occurring in Zelnorm patients. Novartis AG agreed to halt marketing of Zelnorm in light of these adverse side effects, and a nationwide recall was announced shortly thereafter.

Patients taking Zelnorm have typically complained of side effects ranging from headache to diarrhea. However, some patients have experienced more severe side effects.
